When the weather’s cold, a lot of us like to warm up our cars for a few minutes before we leave the house. If you’ve been starting your car and leaving it unattended while it warms up, Hannibal Police have one word for you – don’t.

HPD has received reports of no less than 15 stolen vehicles in Hannibal in the last two months with either the keys left inside or left running unattended.

Hannibal Police say these kinds of vehicle thefts are often crimes of opportunity, with thieves taking advantage of easy targets.

HPD advises you to never leave the area while your vehicle is running, even for a short time, don’t leave your keys or key fobs in your vehicle and never leave valuables in your vehicle in plain sight.
