Farmer’s Almanac Warns Missouri Garden Pests Will Linger

This is one of those cases where good news can also be bad news at the same time. Farmer's Almanac is saying that Missouri's garden season is lasting longer this year. However, that also means the pests that call those gardens home will also be lingering longer than ever before.

I just came across this interesting share from the Old Farmer's Almanac not to be confused with the "new" Farmer's Almanac. It's a graphic that shows Missouri is in the heart of the region where garden season is lasting longer than ever this year.

They say that "Squash vine borers, Japanese beetles, and stink bugs - as well as mosquitos" arrived in states like Missouri earlier and staying later than normal because of the extended garden season. Talk about uninvited and unwanted guests you'd like to lose.

How can Missourians avoid having garden pests in their homes?

There's some great advice from Missouri State University, but I'll give you the short version. Trim vegetation on shrubs, trees and plants in your yard to limit the "bridges" for these pests. Removing debris like stacks of firewood away from your home can also help. Finally, you really need to keep a close eye on places near your home where water can settle leaving standing water that is a prime breeding ground for mosquitos. Making sure your doors and screens are sealed firmly is also key to avoiding the nuisance of these pests who are overstaying their welcome in Missouri this year.
