Let's hope this is as cold as winter gets. The National Weather Service confirmed tonight that no less than five locations in Illinois officially recorded wind chills colder than 30 below zero.

The National Weather Service in Chicago shared this startling graphic today after official reports were in from around the state of Illinois showing the observed temperatures and the wind chills that were also a part of today's big chill.

In case the small graphic is too difficult to read on your device, here are the 5 Illinois places with colder than 30 below wind chills:

  • Rochelle - 35 below zero
  • Rockford - 33 below zero
  • Peru - 32 below zero
  • DeKalb - 33 below zero
  • Dixon - 34 below zero

That combination of below zero temperatures and even colder wind chills meant anyone outside in the elements unprotected was in danger of hypothermia and frostbite in much less than a half hour.

While it will remain cold Tuesday night, the temperatures will begin to recover overnight with highs in the 30's and lows only in the teens for the next day or two. After the brutal past 3 days, Illinois can use a few days to unfreeze itself. How long is it until Spring? Let us count the days.
