As I sit here writing this on Friday morning, The Emoji Movie has a 0 on Rotten Tomatoes. It has 27 negative reviews and no positive reviews. A few of the, er, highlights:

  • “One of the darkest, most dismaying films I have ever seen.” - Emily Yoshida, Vulture
  • “The whole thing remains nakedly idiotic.” - Glenn Kenny, The New York Times
  • “Everyone involved should be ashamed.” - Alissa Wilkinson, Vox
  • “Please restore my eyes to factory settings.” - Johnny Oleksinski, New York Post
  • “Between Poop and Gene Meh, the characters’ names provide a more succinct and effective Emoji Movie review than I ever could.” - Yours Truly, ScreenCrush

As they might say in The Emoji Movie, 😬.

Wait! I just refreshed Rotten Tomatoes; make that 28 negative reviews, 0 positive reviews.

The scores are bad enough to make it the worst reviewed big release of 2017. There’s been plenty of competition for that prize, too. Here are the Rotten Tomatoes scores of the other worst reviewed movies of the year:

Even the widely ridiculed Monster Trucks got a 32 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, and that was a movie based on an idea by an actual child. Over on Metacritic, things are equally grim, with The Emoji Movie earning score of just 9. Over there, Rings got a whopping 25 and CHIPS received a 28. The Emoji Movie was the only 2017 on the list above that scored in the single digits.

Wikipedia lists four other 2017 titles with 0 scores from Rotten Tomatoes, but all four got extremely limited releases or went straight to home video. The Emoji Movie is the only big movie in that vicinity - for the moment. It is possible it could get a couple of positive notices; and because it’s only been reviewed 28 times so far (checks Rotten Tomatoes one more time, yep 28 and holding) it would only take two positive reviews in a row to bring it into a tie with Rings for the worst reviewed 2017 wide release. But to be totally honest, I’m not sure I see that happening.

UPDATE: The Emoji Movie has its first positive review, from Betsy Bozdech of Common Sense Media.

Its 3 percent rating still makes it the worst reviewed wide release of 2017 (for now).
