Yikes… Ed Sheeran Just Got Slapped With a $100 Million Lawsuit
Ed Sheeran is probably thinking about hiding out in that "Castle on the Hill" right about now.
TMZ reports that the singer-songwriter is facing a massive $100 million lawsuit from a company called Structured Asset Sales, who claim that Sheeran's hit single, "Thinking Out Loud," is a copy of Marvin Gaye's "Let's Get It On."
"According to the lawsuit, Sheeran's song has the same melody, rhythms, harmonies, drums, bassline, backing chorus, tempo, syncopation and looping as 'Let's Get It On,'" TMZ writes.
According to documents, Sheeran's song and the album it's featured on, x, sold more than 15 million copies, with "Thinking Out Loud" racking up more than one billion streams on YouTube.
In 2016, "Thinking Out Loud" was nominated for Best Record, Best Performance and Song of the Year at the Grammys.
"Let's Get It On" was written by Edward Townsend in 1973. Townsend's heirs have already sued Sheeran over similarities between the two tracks.
Sheeran was sued in early 2018 for alleged similarities between Tim McGraw and Faith Hill's "The Rest of Our Life"—which Sheeran co-wrote—and "When I Found You," a 2014 song written by Australian songwriters Sean Carey and Beau Golden.
