Dr. Richard Eells’ Open House is This Sunday

February is Black History Awareness Month and in honor of that a very special event will be held this Sunday. The public is invited to a free tour and program Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. honoring Quincy’s unsung heroes at the Underground Railroad home of Dr. Richard Eells, located at 415 Jersey Street.

Quincy was stop “Number One” on the northern route of the Underground Railroad out of Missouri. From Quincy, slaves would secretly stay at the Eells’ home and then move on to another hiding place as they would head north and east to Chicago and eventually Canada, where slavery was no longer allowed.

Because of its significance to the history of the Underground Railroad, and because all the information is documented in the county, state, and federal courts, the National Park Service has designated the Dr. Richard Eells House at 415 Jersey, Quincy, an official Historic Underground Railroad Site.

On Sunday you can join Mett Morris for songs complimenting these stories of heroes in Quincy history. Guests will celebrate the lives of Fr. Augustus Tolton, William “Billy” Dallas and Col. George Iles as well. Refreshments will be served.
