Illinois Now the Home to the 3rd Worst Traffic in the World
Hurry up and wait. That is the mantra for everyone and anyone who has to drive to or through one place in Illinois as new data shows the 3rd worst traffic in the world is found in the Land of Lincoln.
I will admit that sometimes I see data shared that I have a hard time understanding or that just doesn't sound right. In this case, I am not surprised even one little bit. There's a new Global Traffic Scorecard that's just been shared by INRIX. They crunched numbers to determine "travel delay comparisons, costs of congestion to drivers and regions, and commuting trends based on the unique travel patterns within each metro area".
I'll give you two guesses, but you'll only need one to figure out what part of Illinois came in 3rd in the world for the worst traffic. Stand up and take a bow, Chicago.
That number that Fox 32 in Chicago shared is true. The average Chicagoan loses 102 hours being stuck in traffic every single year and, keep in mind, that's average and not a worst-case scenario.
I've managed to escape Chicago traffic much of my life with one memorable exception. About a decade ago, I had to drive The Loop in Chicago during the 5p drive home in late October right as a lake-effect snow event was incoming. I had many hours to contemplate the errors of my life before that drive was over.
That's why this new study saying Chicago has the 3rd worst traffic in the world makes complete sense to me and I doubt we'll ever see this trend change.
