You don't realize until you're a parent exactly how large of an investment is required just to buy one year of school supplies for your kids. If you have many children, the struggle is real. That's why a new ranking of the cheapest school supplies in America is helpful and reveals one retailer that's cheaper than the rest which has 177 Illinois locations.

Thank you, Finance Buzz, for doing this. They did a lot of number crunching looking for the best deals on the 20 most commonly-needed school supply items. What they learned wasn't a total shocker, but the price difference between the #1 and #2 retailers was huge.

What is the store in Illinois with the cheapest school supplies?

It might not surprise you that it's Walmart, but the amount of money saved probably will. Their survey found the cost of all 20 items from Walmart was $54.21. The 2nd best was Dollar General which added up to a total cost of $72.75. That's a savings of nearly $1 for every one of those school supplies. When you factor in multiple children for many families, that's a big difference.
