Buy a Brick to Thank a Veteran
Hannibal has half the money it needs to build a Veterans Memorial overlooking the Mississippi River.
The memorial will cost about $60,000. The project has brought in about $11,000 in donations. The balance of the funds collected so far comes from the sale of memorial bricks which will line the pathway. Those bricks are inscribed with the name of a service member.
The Veterans Memorial and Freedom Bell will be built on Cardiff Hill Overlook, which offers one of the best views in Hannibal. The memorial includes a bell from the U.S.S. Hannibal, a ship the Navy built in 1898. It was used in World War I, World War 2, and the Spanish America War. The ship was decommissioned in 1944 and sunk off the coast of Virginia to establish a coral reef. The Navy sent the bell to Hannibal in the late '40s.
The memorial project is a joint effort of the Veterans Services Commission and the Hannibal Parks and Recreation Department. Memorial bricks can be purchased for $125. Additional donors of $500 or more will be listed on a plaque next to the memorial.
