Broccoli in Walmart Stores in Illinois Suddenly Under Huge Recall
There's a good chance this broccoli could be in your freezer right now. There is now suddenly an urgent recall of broccoli due to a potentially fatal contamination risk.
For once, the fact that I don't eat many vegetables has paid off. For the healthy among us, there's now an urgent recall from the Food and Drug Administration that could affect them. Braga Fresh which makes the Marketside brand broccoli has issued a voluntary recall of product in these packages.
A random test detected Listeria monocytogenes in these Marketside broccoli florets which had a best if used by date of December 10, 2024. The batches that are under recall were distributed in Walmart stores in Illinois according to the urgent recall notice.
The CDC says listeria is "rare but serious". For a normal healthy person, listeria rarely develops into a serious sickness. However, for the very young, very old, those who are pregnant and/or have weakened immune systems can develop serious and potentially fatal illness if infected with listeria.
The concern from the FDA is that many tend to buy vegetables like this and freeze them for use later. That's why they believe that many in Illinois have this broccoli in their freezer right now and will be unaware of the potential listeria contamination.
