Forecast: Missouri Could Get a Ton of Badly Needed Rain in August

There are several different aspects to this, so let's dig in. The data and forecasts come directly from NOAA's Climate Prediction Center. The chance of rain begins almost immediately with this map showing precipitation which begins overnight.

That chance for heavy rain will bring with it flash flood possibilities with northeast and east-central Missouri having the highest possibility of flooding.

Here are the exact words of how much rain could be happening as storms move through Missouri from the National Weather Service discussion:

Training thunderstorms may produce rainfall accumulation in
localized areas of or in excess of 5 inches in a short amount
of time

For the first week and a half of August, this is what their precipitation map looks like.

Looking a bit further down the road in August, most of Missouri is still in the green area where above average precipitation is expected.

As you can see, overall for the month of August, many parts of Missouri could get drenched and that's a good thing for drought-affected areas.

What's interesting is that some other sources don't agree with each other about what Missouri can expect in August. The "new" Farmer's Almanac agrees that every week in August could see significant rain. The "old" Farmer's Almanac thinks it will remain dry. Time will tell which one is correct. Let's hope it's the one where rain helps farmers suffering from drought.
