If you're not up to speed on this issue, a mystery pneumonia that seemed to affect children more than any other group led to mass hospitalizations in China and Europe. An outbreak was also reported last week in both Massachusetts and Ohio.

Based on laboratory findings, these increases in pediatric pneumonia do not appear to be caused by a new virus or other pathogen. Instead, these increases are likely caused by viruses and bacteria we expect to see during the respiratory illness season. CDC will continue to work with state and local officials to monitor the situation.

The bottom line is the CDC doesn't see a trend or a dramatic outbreak - for now. The problem is this is a fluent situation that can change on a dime. I would estimate if this mystery childhood pneumonia suddenly appears in a half dozen new states tomorrow, the CDC will change their tune. The good news is that as of this writing, Missouri and Illinois can put their worries aside.
