Why is there a movement to put an "X" on driver's licenses?

As Newsweek reported, putting an "X" on your driver's license in the area that asks for identification of gender represents someone who is wishing to be referred to as gender-neutral.

Can you legally put an "X" on your Illinois driver's license?

Here's why the answer is a little complicated. Illinois Legal Aid says that there is currently only a "M" or "F" option for gender on an Illinois driver's license.

But...

They mentioned that as of 2024 there is new legislation that will require that "X" become an option in Illinois, too. That's why the answer is both yes and no.

Can you put an "X" for the gender in Illinois? Not today, but as of January 1, 2024, you will have that option.

It's worth noting that according to an article by The Hill, Illinois will allow an "X" for gender on birth certificates though.

The Hill has a complete list of the states that will allow you to put an "X" on a driver's license and/or a birth certificate.
