AI Given Control of Nukes in Simulation & It Annihilated Missouri

Attention global military leaders: please do not ever do this again. The United States gave artificial intelligence control of our nuclear arsenal in a simulation and it proceeded to remove Missouri from the map.

You would think that the world would have learned its lesson already about what happens when you let the machines control dangerous things. Did none of the military leaders ever see the movie War Games or any part of The Terminator series?

Vice just shared an interesting story about what happened when the military gave 5 different artificial intelligence programs control of our nukes. All of them proceeded to make sure Missouri (and the rest of the world for that matter) glow in the dark.

You can see the detailed results of this terrifying simulation in a paper entitled "Escalation Risks from Language Models in Military and Diplomatic Decision-Making". It's a fascinating play-by-play of every step the artificial intelligence makes in an effort to bring "peace". In some cases, it was bombing enemies into submission which includes making sure the middle of America (hello, Missouri) is nothing but a crater. 

The interesting aspect of this is the movie War Games with Matthew Broderick and Ally Sheedy explored what's happening in 2024 where the computers were given control of nukes. I know it was just a movie, but the principle remains that you can never let the robots control everything.

If you live in Missouri near the Air Force or Army bases or missile silos, you better also hope the machines never take over. Or else.
